Joan Oller: “Llucmajor has much to offer the visitor”

Llucmajor

Joan Oller, second deputy mayor for Tourism and Sports in Llucmajor, seeks to develop tourist activity within the municipality.

Llucmajor is the largest municipal area of Mallorca and includes S’Arenal, a pioneering centre of tourism on the island.

Today, the municipal area has a total of 14 rural tourism establishments and 45 hotels, among them, first-class hotels such as the Torre Mallorca Hilton, Son Julià and the Son Antem Golf&Spa Marriott hotel.

As Oller explains, the urban centre has an important historical and architectural heritage to offer the visitor: Sant Miquel’s parish church, the San Buenaventura cloister and the statue of Jaume III are part of a route that the council wants to turn into a guided tour.

“We want to draw attention to these sites of interest and make them more accessible to tourists, since they are an important addition to what we have to offer”, explains Oller.

The municipality boasts such emblematic areas as S’Estanyol, S’Estalella and Cala Pi, all natural settings, protected from mass tourism and with great potential for rural accommodation and outdoor activities.

And of course, we want foreign visitors to get to know Llucmajor’s famous fiestas.

With their 466 years of history, they are one of the oldest in Mallorca, alongside Dijous Bo of Inca.

From 29th September to 19th October, the streets of Llucmajor are dressed for the celebrations. Naturally, all residents and tourists are invited to celebrate “the fiestas of Llucmajor” with us.

Llucmajor

Mallorca sees about 10 million tourists each year but it is still possible to find places "off the beaten track". Many can be found in Llucmajor, the largest municipality in Mallorca. There are white, sandy beaches such as the unspoilt Cala Pi, with calm, crystal-clear waters ideal for scuba diving; and beautiful coves and cliffs with spectacular views of the southern Mallorca coast. Llucmajor also boasts the most extensively developed cycling tourism network on the island which includes routes that pass through Cap Enderrocat, Cap Blanc, Cala Pi, the sanctuary of Gracia and S'Estanyol. Other activities are catered for by a range of facilities for water sports and a golf course. All along the coast are 16th century defensive towers, at Cala Pi, S'Estalella and Cap Blanc, the remains of a defence system throughout Mallorca against pirates and corsairs, which now serve as excellent viewpoints for walkers.

Among the many fiestas held on Mallorca, one of the most popular is the Llucmajor Autumn fiesta cycle beginning on 29th September, saint Miquel`s day. Firas de Tardors (Autumn Fairs), a gastronomy week, craft and industrial products exhibitions, country fair and cattle competitions are some of the events held during the celebrations and enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. Winter Fiestas begin with the fiesta of Sant Antoni, patron saint of animals. Bonfires are lit in the village streets and villagers sing songs and play the ximbomba, a primitive rhythm instrument. Parades of gigantes y cabezudos, giants with large heads, take place in the streets of S` Arenal and S` Estanyol and the ball d` aferrat, a folk dance is performed. The following day it is traditional to bless animals in front of a statue of the saint. The most important of the summer celebrations is the fiesta of Santa Cándida held during the second week in August.

Only 25 km from Palma, Llucmajor`s capital town, also called Llucmajor is the centre of Mallorca`s shoemaking industry. There is a Shoemaker`s memorial at the western town gate. Steeped in history, the town was the site of a famous battle between the last king of Mallorca, Jaume III and his cousin Pedro IV of Aragon in 1349. Jaume III was defeated and killed in the battle, bringing to an end the 120 year independent kingdom of Mallorca. A bronze sculpture representing Prince James, holding the fallen body of his father with one hand and raising the flag with the other can be seen in the Paseo de Jaume III. Unveiled on the 18th October 1927, the sculptor Josep Maria Arnau i Camps was a disciple of Gaudí.

Those interested in architecture will not want to miss the imposing Sant Miquel`s parish church built between 1781 and 1853 and situated on the Plaça Santa Catalina Tomàs. Equally impressive is the Convent of San Buenaventura on the Calle del Convento with its neighbouring cloister dating from the seventeenth century. Lovers of prehistory will enjoy visiting archaeological sites such as the four thousand year old talayots of Capocorb Vell. Talayots are circular or square towers up to 9m high built with stones, similar to the Iron Age brochs found in Scotland.
