The mallorcan-embroidery stitch is part of the history of Majorca’s traditional embroidery. The mallorcan-embroidery is a free-stitch embroidery technique, as it is done directly on top of the fabric. The embroidery is present on clothes and house linen.
Examples from the 18th Century have been preserved, although its importance has been lost over time.
History
In olden times the base fabric was homemade cloth: linen fabrics woven at home.
Fine linen fabrics are now used. At first a single colour was used in one or two tones: turquoise blue, honey or copper red. The motifs are always plants, flowers, fruit and leaves, joined by lines of undulating stalks that are never very dense and are reminiscent of grapevine tendrils.
